5/1/03: STRANGE HOMECOMING
It's been a strange day, all things considered. I think I need to record my thoughts in this journal again to calm my mind, which has been racing since I got here.
As soon as I knocked on the door of that mansion on the hill, all hell broke loose. A woman and two men answered the door. The woman was small, with reddish-dark hair and the look of a hunting animal in her eyes. One of the men was skinny and blonde -- I think he was European, and the other was a huge monster of a man. I could barely get a word in edgewise through their arguing, banter, and the general chaos of being around them. It was clear they had no idea who I was, but they did little to protect any secrets, and soon were quizzing me about my so-called powers and trying to find a room to put me up in.
Soon someone whom I recognized strolled in. It was the Wolf. I've seen him in some of my dreams. He is some kind of teacher, I think. I remember knowing him, learning from him, before. If only I could remember his name. He called me "Razor" and I hated that my first words to him were correcting him against doing it again. But it hurts now to hear that word used to refer to me.
Then things got really strange. Three more people walked in -- one was a guy in a kilt. He said nothing, listened to the blabbering for a few minutes, shook his head, and left. I could not blame him. The second was a brown-haired woman with the eyes of an eagle. She looked me over, but didn't say much. I don't know what she thought of me.
The third was a woman dressed in red. She was the smallest of all the women here, but moved like a caged wildcat. They called her Harlee, but I knew from the moment I set eyes on her that I'd seen her before, but with another name. When she showed up, that's when things got ugly. The Wolf grabbed her and slung her over his shoulder. She was screaming and pounding his back, but the man is strong. I started to say something, but before I got a word out the first big burly guy proceeded to whip out a GREEN LANTERN RING and zap the wolf, the woman and everything into a big green bubble, nice as you please. Again, I tried to yell in between the arguing and shouting, but no one seemed to hear me asking what was going on, or why they were torturing that poor woman. I heard the Wolf yelling something about her being a criminal, and the others yelling right back that she was a guest or something.
Anyway, she was starting to freak out in that green bubble, and no one seemed to care. I couldn't let her lose it in there. I of all people understand what it's like to be imprisoned in a small place. I didn't know what I could do, but I had to try. It hurt me to do it, but I threw up my own magnetic field to try to disrupt the green bubble around her, or protect her, or something. Nothing happened.
Finally, their argument slowed enough for someone to answer me. They said she was a criminal named Harlee Quinn. Only I knew different. They finally agreed to let her out of the bubble and she ran. I ran after her.
I don't know if what I did was wise or noble, but it seemed like the right thing at the time. I convinced her to stay. I told her she had helped me (true) and that I wanted the chance to return that favor. I could see she was as scared and confused as I was. She made me promise to try to protect her, and God help me, I did.
My first day on the "superhero" job, and I've already overdone it.
They decided to put Harlee and me in apartments near their mansion, so I don't fry their computer. I guess this will have to do for now. I'm still hoping these people can help me, but my certainty is leaving me now. Anyway, throwing up that force field upset my system. I've got to go take my pills. Writing about this seems to have calmed me down a bit. Maybe I can even get myself to sleep, and not have it shattered again by the dreams.
I will keep writing in this journal. I think they were right about it clearing my mind.
